Derûn
Derûn, which brings together the enchanting landscapes of the Black Sea with masterful cinematography, delves into the depths of an impossible love story. This tale, where love, betrayal, and regret intertwine, focuses on the sorrowful end of a journey that begins with love. The foundation of the film Derûn is based on the first story of the Mesnevi, The Story of the Sultan and the Concubine. Marife is a woman in her sixties, living alone in the Black Sea region… She is the protagonist of forty years of seclusion, having distanced herself from humanity. What confines Marife to this solitude is the great love and heartbreak she experienced in her youth. After forty years of living alone, one day there is a knock at her door. Standing there is Ateş, the son of her great love, İlyas. He has come with his father’s funeral. İlyas’s last wish is to be buried in Marife’s garden. But will Marife be able to quell the anger she has carried all her life? Even if their bodies cannot meet, will the souls find reunion beyond all this? Müge Uğurlar explains her first feature film, Derûn, with the words of Rumi: “The spark that started this journey was love and desire. Afterward, obstacles and trials stood like insurmountable bumps. Death overcame these bumps, and the reunion of souls occurred beyond bodies. On this journey between the transient world and the unchanging truth, some were lost along the way, while others completed the journey.”
